Olympus Has Fallen

Gerald Butler is a guy’s guy and we all loved him in 300 but he is not Bruce Willis. As the story goes a disgraced former Presidential guard, Butler, finds himself trapped inside the White House in the wake of a terrorist attack; using his inside knowledge, Butler works with national security to rescue the President from his kidnappers. It’s Die Hard in The White House and it fails badly. In fact they literally steal scenes from the original Die Hard. Why?
Great actors are in this movie, Morgan Freeman, Angela Bassett, and Academy Award Winner Melissa Leo  in a less than becoming role. Ashley Judd even shows up in a brief role. All this star power does not work and they should have had the writers from Scary Movie take over and make this a comedy. It would have been a HUGE hit.

Verdict:
Wait for “White House Down” this summer from the people who know how to do action movies.

Oz the Great and Powerful

It took awhile but Disney got it right. This is a pretty good sequel to The Wizard of Oz. The story is about a small-time magician, played by James Franco, who is swept away to an enchanted land and is forced into a power struggle between three witches. Writer Mitchell Kapner did a great job of incorporating elements of the original movie so that OZ is a seamless prequel for future generations. Casting also did a great job by having Michelle Williams and Academy Award winner Rachel Weisz in the movie. Milus Kunis however steals the show and is excellent. James Franco is finally showing some acting chops rather than just using his good looks to smile his way thru movies.
Finally the make-up is outstanding. This is however a pretty scary movie for kids.

Verdict:
Must see!

The Call

She has been mention in ASAP Rocky latest hit record but Halle has been laying low for quite sometime. Can you remember the last time she was in something other than the trash mags when her men were fighting over her? Well Halle still has got it (she still looks amazing) and The Call is way better than I thought it was going to be.
The story is about a veteran 911 operator (Hallie) who takes a life-altering call from a teenage girl who has just been abducted, she realizes that she must confront a killer from her past in order to save the girl's life.
Halle's wig that she wears in the movie is bizarre but she pulls off her best performance in years.
The movie is similar to Ashley Judd's Kiss the Girls and there has not been a major movie out like that in quite sometime. Most of these movies are filmed in Canada, show up on Lifetime, and has no sizzle. This one does.
Verdict:
Don't listen to the critics, just go see it.

Safe Haven

This is another movie that was made from a Nicholas Spark novel. Out of all the ones I have seen I would say this is the weakest due to the fact that it seems to be a remix of the movie Sleeping with the Enemy sprinkled with The Sixth Sense. In other words it’s not up to par to The Notebook which made Spark famous. The story is about a young woman with a mysterious past who lands in Southport, North Carolina where her bond with a widower forces her to confront the dark secret that haunts her.

The story sounds interesting until you cast (2) “B” List actors who have not ever been the star of a hit movie. Julianne Hough, former dancer from Dancing with the Stars, does her best but you can tell that she is a rookie actress. Josh Duhamel, who plays the widower, is just eye candy for the women who go to see this film but he is also a poor actor.

Verdict:
You will feel like you are sitting at home watching a bad Lifetime movie.
